It goes without saying that a basic safety check on your car is an absolute must before you hit the road. Everyone should get a proper service or expert assessment of their vehicle prior to heading off on holiday. Jeff Osborne of Gumtree Autos SA offers five essential safety checks that everyone can and should do.
The wheels – A tyre inspection at a dealership is free. Make time and have your tyres checked. If time is an issue, the DIY option is to carefully inspect your tyres by searching for bulges and worn sections. Don’t forget to turn the tyres to ensure you don’t miss a spot.
Quick hack: Insert a 10c coin between the grooves in the tread -if you can see the lily on the coin, you need to replace the tyre immediately.
Essential tools- Prepare for a flat tyre by checking your jack and spanner are in place, accessible and actually work. Make sure your spare tyre is of a reasonable quality and that you have a warning triangle to place on the road.
Windscreen Wipers- Driving in the rain with malfunctioning wipers is a serious hazard. Test them regularly to ensure that they are working properly, you can even use bottle of water to test. Install new ones immediately if they are not working properly.
Brakes- Don’t compromise when it comes to brakes. If your foot presses too close to the floor when you hit the brakes and/or they make a grinding sound, it’s time to get new ones. This is a clear sign that they need to be replaced right away.
Lights- Test the vehicle at night to ensure that all the lights are working properly and that the high beam setting still work. Pay special attention to the indicators and your brake lights.
